Jesus Himself tells us that all the wicked will die when He comes at His second coming

So, what does Jesus say will happen to the wicked when He comes?

  • “And as it was in the days of Noahso it will be also in the days of the Son of Man:

  • “They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

  • “Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built;

  • “but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.

  • Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed. Luke 17:26-30.

Jesus said to look at Noah’s day. Noah and his family went into the ark and the door was shut; Then the flood came and killed everyone who had not gone into the ark. All the people in the world were killed in the flood except for Noah and his family.

Jesus also said to remember lot. The same day that Lot left Sodom, fire came out of heaven and destroyed everyone who was in the city.

Jesus says that this is exactly how it will be when the Son of Man is revealed, at His second coming.

Some people believe that when Jesus comes that all the people of the world who are not saved, that they will get another chance.

But this idea is not found in Scripture. As we are seeing, the Bible says that the wicked will all die when Jesus comes. There will be no one left alive because the wicked are all killed and the righteous are all taken to heaven.

No Person is Left Alive on the Earth in the Thousand Years

Jeremiah also helps to show that there will be no one left on the earth after Jesus comes. It is interesting that he uses the same words used in the book of Genesis to describe the Earth. The Earth was without form and void.

  • And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earththey shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground. Jeremiah 25:33.

  • I beheld the earth, and indeed it was without form, and void; And the heavens, they had no light.

  • I beheld the mountains, and indeed they trembled, And all the hills moved back and forth.

  • I beheld, and indeed there was no man, And all the birds of the heavens had fled.

  • I beheld, and indeed the fruitful land was a wilderness, And all its cities were broken down At the presence of the LORD, By His fierce anger. Jeremiah 4:23-26.

All that is left on the world are broken down cities, and dead people are also left to lay on the ground from one end of the earth to the other. The ground is extremely unstable and trembles. Even the hills move back and forth. There is no man left! This is the result of God’s fierce anger, and at the presence of the Lord, all this was done to the earth!

Satan will be Under Lock and Key.

When Jesus comes, we saw that the righteous will be taken to Heaven to be with Him. We also saw that all the wicked will be killed by the brightness of His coming, and we saw that the earth will be destroyed to the extent that Jeremiah said the Earth “was without form and void”. No man will be left alive on the earth. In fact, the dead bodies of the wicked will be found over the whole surface of the earth. Of course there will be no one to bury them because no one is left alive.

Now, we see that Satan is put into a bottomless pit and is bound for a thousand years.

  • And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

  • And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

  • And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. Revelation 20:1-3.

  • And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Jude 1:6

Some believe that the righteous people will reign with Jesus on earth during this time, so they think Satan must be somewhere else. However, it is very clear from the Bible that no one will be left alive on the earth during the thousand year period. In fact, the whole earth will be strewn with the dead bodies of the wicked. There is no one that Satan could deceive or tempt because they are all dead. So the earth could very well be the pit that Satan is placed in. It would be a fitting place for Satan to view the destruction of cities and man and think what he has done. This will also help Satan to think about his own lack of a future!

The Wicked Experience the Second Death! at the End of the 1000 Years

Later, after the 1000 years are finished, the rest of the dead will be brought back to life. These are the wicked dead, who do not live again until after the thousand years are ended. This is the second resurrection, the resurrection of damnation which occurs a thousand years after the righteous are raised.

  • But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. Revelation 20:5 (first part).

Since the wicked experience the second death, they will be killed by the judgement of God. However the righteous will never again experience death. Only those who are raised in the first resurrection of the righteous will the second death have no power!

  • He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. Revelation 2:11.

The second death is only for the wicked. Those who overcometh will not be hurt at all.

  • And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

  • But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

  • Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. Revelation 20:4-6.

Also, if we look at verse 6, above, we see that all those who were taken by Jesus, all those who were raised by Jesus in the first resurrection, would never experience death again. They will not experience the second death. Only the wicked who were either killed by the brightness of Jesus’ coming or who were already dead (they did not experience the first resurrection) will eventually experience the second death.

The following verses describe the wicked being raised to life, those that are still in the grave, and they are thrown into the lake of fire once they are judged.

  • And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

  • And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

  • And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:13-15

Notice that the second death is connected with the wicked being put in the lake of fire. The wicked cannot be tormented day and night for ever and ever if it is suppose to be when they die the second death.

In the following verses, we see the future of both the righteous and the wicked are described:

  • He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

  • “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:7-8.

The righteous inherit all things but the wicked will burn with fire and brimstone. Again notice that the second death is connected with the wicked being put in the fire. The wicked cannot be tormented day and night for ever and ever if it is suppose to be when they die the second death.

Since the wicked will experience the second death it makes very good sense when we see that Jude 13 reminds us that the death of the wicked is permanent!

  • raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.

  • Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints,

  • to execute judgment on allto convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

  • These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage. Jude 1:13-16

It says that there is reserved for the wicked the blackness of darkness forever! So, it is clear that Jude is speaking of eternal death! A death where blackness and darkness lasts forever! This is the final judgment of the wicked and it is the second death from which there is no return.

Now to give you a better overview of the final destruction of the wicked, lets expand our look in Scripture. Below, I have placed four parallel accounts of what will happen when the wicked are judged.

We already know that he wicked will experience the second death; But there are other parts of these verses that seem to suggest that the wicked will suffer in the flames forever. So lets look into this to see if there is an answer that will harmonize these Scripture.

These parallel accounts are color-coordinated to help you see how the four accounts relate to each other. By looking at the same colored text in the different columns, you might be able to piece together more of the ideas presented in these verses.
